Guardians complete comeback, shut out White Sox to reach ALCS

Cleveland won Game 5 by 2–0 after falling behind 0–2 in the series; Gavin Williams struck out 12 over 5⅔ scoreless innings.

Cleveland wins the deciding game

The Cleveland Guardians advanced to the American League Championship Series on Saturday night with a 2–0 victory over the Chicago White Sox in the deciding fifth game of their Division Series. Cleveland completed the comeback after losing the first two games of the best-of-five matchup.

José Ramírez supplied both runs with a two-run home run in the fourth inning. That swing stood up because Cleveland’s pitchers held Chicago to three hits and no runs. The official line score credited the Guardians with six hits and no errors; the White Sox committed one error.

The result sends Cleveland to face the Tampa Bay Rays in the ALCS. The Guardians’ official schedule lists Game 1 for Monday night in Tampa. As always, fans should check the league schedule for any later change in start time or broadcast details.

Williams turns an unusual assignment into a dominant start

Gavin Williams started Game 5 only two days after recording the final three outs of Cleveland’s Game 4 victory in relief. He responded with 5⅔ scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out 12. Major League Baseball credited him with the win.

The short turnaround was unusual because Williams had not previously worked as a professional reliever before Game 4. His ability to return for the start gave Cleveland length and kept Chicago from building early pressure. The strikeout total also limited balls in play, reducing the number of defensive chances that could turn into unexpected rallies.

Cade Smith recorded the save with 1⅔ hitless innings and four strikeouts. Cleveland’s pitchers struck out 21 batters in the nine-inning game, a measure of how completely the staff controlled the final contest.

A five-game reversal

Chicago won Games 1 and 2 and returned home with two opportunities to close the series. Cleveland won Game 3, broke through with a six-run inning in Game 4 and then used pitching and one decisive home run in the finale. The route showed two different ways to win: a high-scoring elimination game followed by a tight shutout.

For the White Sox, Sean Burke allowed two runs over five innings and took the loss. That was a competitive start, but Chicago’s offense could not convert enough opportunities against Williams and the bullpen. A postseason series can turn on small samples, and the final score does not erase the strength Chicago showed in taking the first two games.

For Cleveland, the comeback resets the stakes rather than ending them. Tampa Bay had the American League’s best regular-season record, and the seven-game championship series introduces new pitching decisions, travel and roster considerations.

The key verified result is complete: Cleveland won 2–0 and advanced. Upcoming games remain scheduled events, so previews should distinguish confirmed results from projected lineups or expected starters that can still change.
